UN Women awards participants of anti-gender based violence training in preparation of job placement

Mafraq, 8 December 2015. UN Women Jordan awarded around fifty women from the Governorate of Mafraq who successfully completed a two-weeks training on gender based violence. The aim of the training was to increase awareness about gender based violence, women’s rights and local services as well as other ways women and girls are abused, with a special focus on women’s rights in the workplace. The event took place at the Teachers Club House in Mafraq and was generously founded by the Government of Finland and the Italian Development Cooperation.

“Gender violence is a complex issue, whose roots lie deeply rooted in gender inequality and discrimination, especially in the work place” affirmed Mr. Giuseppe Belsito, Representative of the UN Women Country Office for Jordan. “The importance of understanding and identifying the various forms of gender based violence is crucial for community development, it will not only help participants to seek assistance and justice in case needed, but it will be also beneficial in their future professional endeavors” he added.

This training opportunity is part of a larger career counseling initiative promoted by UN Women in the Governorate of Mafraq, where women and girls have access to comprehensive professional trainings to facilitate their job placement and inclusion in the national labor force. Topics covered by the training package include communication, time management, and negotiation. At the end of this training course, participants will be continue their professional development thought direct placement in garment factories located in Mafraq.

This initiative falls under UN Women’s ongoing efforts to boost employability and civic engagement opportunities for women and girls in Jordanian poverty pockets and host communities under a dedicated project targeting the Governorates of Mafraq, Irbid and Zarqa.
