Zain Collaborates with UN Women to support Women's Empowerment Principles
Zain Jordan signed the “CEO Statement of Support for the Women’s Empowerment Principles (WEPs)” produced by UN Women and the United Nations Global Compact. Zain Jordan is considered among the first companies in the region to collaborate with UN Women with the aim to further empower women in the workplace and in the community.
As per the statement, Zain commits to create a model of behavior within the company for advancing equality between women and men through the implementation of seven principles that companies and other sectors can take to advance and empower women, to uplift their economic and social status, and to promote sustainable development.
Signing the statement confirms Zain’s dedication to direct its efforts towards social development. In 2017, Zain launched its “WE” program that aims to achieve gender equality and has become a major focus in the development of Zain's business environment, contributing to increase women's participation in leadership and decision-making positions, thus ensuring women can play an active role in developing and leading the company towards achieving its strategic goals.
For its part, Zain strives to ensure the integration of diversity and inclusion into its business strategy as part of its corporate responsibility to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals by directing its core business activities to support women’s empowerment.
Zain dedicates its digital strategy to continuously support initiatives that drive inclusive development, sustainability, diversity, and that lead to social and economic growth in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The company works on changing policies to address persistent disparities to lead to systemic changes. Zain provides several benefits to working mothers, including a Zain Nursery which accommodates the children of employees and provides them with the high standard of care, in addition to organizing several programs and initiatives targeting female employees.
Moreover, Zain launches and supports various projects and initiatives to empower and support women in local communities, with a specific focus on income generation, access to suitable job opportunities and skills development. Some of these projects provide free internet services to refugee women in the Jerash camp to enable them participating in the language exchange program: “Bannat connect”. Another project helped creating more than 12 job opportunities for women in the Zain’s call center for customer services located in the Ma’an Governorate. This initiative is funded by the Ministry of Planning and International Cooperation / Economic and Social Productivity Enhancement Program which aims to support the local community and focuses on training and employing women in the area.
Zain also is working hard to bridge the gender gap in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields. In addition, the company supports various programs in the local communities, such as the design and sewing courses at the Dezain space and in partnership with theJordan River Foundation.
UN Women is the UN organization dedicated to gender equality and the empowerment of women. A global champion for women and girls, UN Women was established to accelerate progress on meeting their needs worldwide. The WEPs, the product of a partnership between UN Women and the UN Global Compact, provide a strong framework to support companies when striving for gender equality in the workplace, marketplace, and community. UN Women works with companies in Jordan in order to tailor existing policies and programmes —or establish needed new ones— to realize women’s empowerment in the labor market with the support of the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA).
