The Government of Australia, through the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, extended an additional timely contribution to the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women) in response to COVID-19, and to provide livelihood opportunities to vulnerable Jordanian and Syrian refugee women. Activities will engage more than 500 vulnerable women in UN Women’s Oases centers located in the Za’atari and Azraq refugee camps, as well as in Oases located in community centers managed in partnership with the Ministry of Social Development in the Governorates of Zarqa, East Amman, Karak, Maan, and Tafileh.

H.E. Eng. Mousa Maaytah, Minister of Political and Parliamentary Affairs and Chair of the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Women’s Empowerment, launched today the Communications Strategy of the Jordanian National Action Plan (JONAP) for the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1325 (UNCSR 1325) on Women, Peace and Security at the presence of national and international partners, including representatives of security sector agencies. Developed through an extensive consultation process engaging member of the 1325 National Coalition, the Strategy outlines the communications approach that will be followed to build awareness of and support for the implementation of the JONAP.

Under a new partnership between the Department of Statistics and UN Women, the first validation workshop for the new Making Every Woman and Girl Count programme was held on 15 October 2019. Attended by 70 participants – including data producers and users from various line ministries, civil society organizations, academics, researchers and gender specialists – the workshop aimed to validate the findings of an initial assessment of the state of gender statistics in Jordan, which identified existing gaps and invited participants to work on addressing them by designing strategies and strengthening existing mechanisms.

In partnership with the Greater Amman Municipality and the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women), the Arabic HeforShe movement organized a closing ceremony to mark the conclusion of its second phase and to commemorate the milestone achievement of 20,000 commitments reached across the Kingdom in support of gender equality and women’s empowerment. Launched in 2015 in Jordan, Arabic HeforShe engaged more than 500 youth volunteers in Jordan’s universities and communities, 200 of whom were awarded during the closing ceremony.

Held at the presence of H.E Mr. Hidenao Yanagi, Ambassador of Japan to Jordan, the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women) organized a graduation ceremony in the Azraq refugee camp, to acknowledge the achievements of 50 Syrian refugee women who successfully completed skill trainings and capacity building under UN Women’s Incentive-Based Volunteerism (IBV) scheme. Generously funded by the Government of Japan, this initiative provided vulnerable women with relevant job skills, while meeting their protection concerns and promoting empowerment through leadership and civic engagement.
