Date:

New York [USA], 16 March 2015. The Permanent Mission of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan to the UN and the Jordanian National Commission for Women – with the support of UN Women Jordan - organized a Beijing+20 side event titled ‘Women and Armed Conflicts: A Regional Perspective’ during the 59th Session of the Commission on the Status of Women. Attended by more than 130 participants from all over the world, the event comes at the hedge of the Beijing+20 review sustained by the joint programme ‘Realizing Beijing+20 in Jordan: Women in Action!’ (UN Women, UNFPA, WHO, UNICEF, UNRWA, UNDP, UNESCO, JNCW): an inclusive and comprehensive national appraisal process, that has no precedent in previous Beijing reviews carried out in Jordan.

‘Women are the first victims in any war, not because men suffer less, but because they end up carrying the burden of the entire family’ affirmed H.E. Mrs. Dina Kawar, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Jordan to the UN, during her opening remarks. Mr. Kawar recalled the important role played by Jordan as member of the UN Security Council in promoting women’s rights in armed conflicts worldwide. Her Excellency also introduced a video message by Her Royal Highness Princess Basma bint Talal, calling on youth to inherit the legacy of the Beijing Declaration: ‘With the will of my Arab sisters and the participation of women throughout the world, together with all those committed to furthering the rights of women, let us once again capture the momentum witnessed by the world in 1995 in Beijing’.

The event proceeded with a panel discussion with national and international speakers, sharing views on the situation of Women and Armed Conflicts in the Middle East and on the pivotal role played by Jordan in supporting women affected by the regional turmoil. Participants to the panel discussion included Dr. Salma Nims - Secretary General of the Jordanian National Commission for Women, Ms. Alaa Murabit -  Women, Peace and Security Expert, Ms. Ghada Saba - Filmmaker and Beijing+20 Gender Equality Champion and Ms. Ms. Layla Naffa, Director of Projects at Arab Women Organization (Jordan).
