UN Women Jordan fosters jobs opportunities for women and girls in Mafraq, Irbid and Zarqa

Date:

UN Women Jordan has launched the program ‘Services to improve the socio-economic well-being of vulnerable Jordanian women in host communities in Al Mafraq, Irbid and Zarqa Governorates’ to boost employability and civic engagement opportunities for women and girls, aged 18-26, in the targeted poverty pockets and host communities. UN Women will offer career guidance, technical trainings and job placement services to more than 150 participants- with the specific aim of increasing women and girls’ employability in national garment factories.

According to the recently released Beijing+20 National Report from Jordan, women continue to face higher unemployment rates and discriminatory gender wage gap, despite higher achievements in the secondary and university education levels. In order to overcome social barriers which limit women’s access to job opportunities in Jordan, UN Women’s multidimensional interventions will also encompass advocacy efforts on women’s rights in the work place as well as awareness raising sessions on women’s leadership and participation in the decision-making in the private sector.

‘Women and girls in Jordanian host communities have become pillars of change and a model for the entire region.’ affirmed Mr. Giuseppe Belsito, UN Women Jordan Representative. ‘We will continue to support those who are most in need in accomplish their aspirations though increased job opportunities, in order to realize a more prosperous and stable future for their families and communities’ he added.
