UN Women Director of Programmes visits UN Women Country Office

On 16 May 2016, the UN Women Director of Programmes, Ms. Maria Noel Vaeze - accompanied by the UN Women Regional Director for the Arab States, Mr. Mohammed Naciri - visited the UN Women Country Office for the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. Ms. Vaeze started her visit by meeting the HeforShe volunteers in Jordan, who presented activities and achievements which led to reaching the ambitious goal of 10,000+ HeforShe commitments – making Jordan the first country in the region in terms of participation to the global advocacy campaign.

Ms. Vaeze also had the chance to visit the three UN Women-led ‘Women and Girls Oasis’ in the Za’atari refugee camp, interacting with Syrian refugee women who are part of the women’s committee and who work under the UN Women “cash-for-work” programme in the camp. In addition, she visited the UN Women/UNESCO joint programme site in Umm El-Jimmal, meeting Jordanian and Syrian women engaged in the production of basalt handcrafted products and in the preservation of the local archeological site.

During the meeting with H.E. Minister Reem Abu Hassan, Ms. Vaeze expressed her appreciation on the valuable partnership between both entities and restated UN Women’s continues support to the Ministry of Social Development. Ms. Maria Noel Vaeze also met with the Secretary General of the Jordanian National Committer of Women (JNCW), Dr. Salma Nims. The UN Women Director emphasized the fruitful collaboration between UN Women and JNCW and extended her gratitude to HRH Princess Basma Bint Talal for her outstanding leadership in advancing the women’s agenda in Jordan in her role of UN Women Honorary Goodwill Ambassador.

Ms.Vaeze, concluded her first visit to Jordan by attending an informal dinner with the UN Women Civil Society Advisory Group. On this occasion, she reinforced the importance of engaging the civil society in advocating for gender equality and women’s empowerment.
