Budget: USD $1,375,858
Project Goal: To support vulnerable groups affected by the crisis to have access to improved social protection and improved legal and operational protection frameworks and services in governorates most affected by the Syrian crisis.
UN Women, through its project titled, ‘Supporting Women in Host Communities and in Jordan’s Refugee Camps through Prevention and Response to Gender Based Violence and Promotion of Self-Reliance and Social’ (“Eid bi Eid”), is working to both address the urgent needs of refugees and the needs of those living in Jordan’s hosting communities. Through this dual approach, UN Women provides essential services to refugees living in Za’atari refugee camp and livelihoods and social cohesion support to those living in hosting communities. Within this framework, in the Za’atari refugee camp, under this funding stream, UN Women operates one safe space for women and girls – in cooperation with the World Food Programme - offering a range of essential services including cash for work – to further nutritional diversity among female headed households, protection referral services and life skills.
In Jordan’s hosting communities, the project is rolling out support in the area of women’s employment and social cohesion. These initiatives, currently underway in Mafraq, are opportunities for young women to enter waged, formal sector jobs in Jordan’s garment sector. UN Women is also working with the Asian Football Development Project and Search for Common Ground to engage youth through support – Syrian and Jordanian – in trust building and community engagement.
To assist national structures to respond to the impact of the crisis UN Women has expanded its partnership with the Ministry of Social Development to support their work on women’s economic empowerment at both the policy and community level. In addition to financial assistance UN Women, with UNHCR, supports the Ministry in its role chairing the national social protection task force. This taskforce is the body for coordination and discussion on both refugee and development interventions in the area of social protection in Jordan.
