Amman, 8 March 2020. Held under the esteemed patronage of Her Royal Highness Princess Basma bint Talal – UN Women Goodwill Ambassador, in collaboration with the Greater Amman Municipality and the Women’s Metropolis Network, UN Women and the Royal Film Commission launched the 8th edition of the Women’s Film Week (8-12 March 2020) in commemoration of International Women’s Day.

Mr. Amjad Al-Adaileh, Minister of State for Media Affairs awarded youth who participated in the media competition ‘I’m Generation Equality’.

‘Jordanian women continue to make remarkable progress on women’s rights and leadership, they are a true source of inspiration and at the forefront of addressing emerging challenges. On this International Women’s Day, we are mobilizing youth to promote women’s empowerment in their communities and to realize the promise of a more equal and just future for all’ affirmed Mr. Ziad Sheikh, UN Women Jordan Representative.

This year’s theme for International Women’s Days is ‘I am Generation Equality: Realizing Women’s Rights’, which is aligned with the 25th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action. Adopted in 1995 at the Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing, China, the Beijing Platform for Action is recognized as the most progressive roadmap for the empowerment of women and girls, everywhere. To mark this anniversary, an intergenerational dialogue featuring Jordanian women active in film industry has been organized as part of the opening of the Women’s Film Week under the artistic direction of Ms. Ghada Saba.

Since 2012, the Women’s Film Week offers a unique opportunity for the Jordanian public to see and reflect on women’s issues as portrayed through the work of various national and international filmmakers.  Stories from more than fourteen countries will be portrayed during this year’s edition, with the generous support of the Embassies of Australia, Canada, Finland, France, Italy, Mexico, the Netherlands, Norway, Panama, the Republic of Korea, Romania, Spain, Sweden, the United States, as well as the British Council, the Cervantes Institute, and Korea Foundation.

Public screenings will take place at the Rainbow Theater from 9 to 13 March at 6pm and 8pm. In addition, special projections will be organized throughout the week at the Khawarizmi Technical University College, at the Community Center in Taibeh (Karak), and in UN Women’s Oasis Centers in the Azraq and Za’atari refugee camps.
