Event description

Empowered to close down the gender knowledge gap, UN Women Jordan, the Swedish Embassy in Amman and an accumulation of local Jordanian partners will be undertaking the organization of HerStory Edit-a-thon series for International Women's Day 2018. 200 young writers are going to be embarking on task to empower women online in this years Edit-a-thon, wielding 365 features of inspirational rural and urban women activists, experts and role models from Jordan and the Arab world on. With the initiative, to increase the number of women represented on Wikipedia, make the internet more gender-equal and draw attention to the important achievements of great Jordanian and Arab women.

Wikipedia is the world’s largest online and user-generated encyclopaedia. Its content influences and colours users’ knowledge about the world. But there is great imbalance on the website, like in society at large. Ninety per cent of the content is created by men, and there are four times more articles about men than there are about women. The figures vary regionally, but the general picture is clear: on the world’s largest online knowledge production platform, women’s success stories aren’t told to the same extent as those of men.
