Voices of Resilience: UN Women Jordan's Trailblazing Women Paving the Way in the 16 Days of Activism

In the heart of Jordan, where stories of resilience and empowerment intertwine, three remarkable women resembles the meaning of change, dedication to the cause of gender equality. As we embark on the annual global campaign of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, the spotlight turns to these unsung heroes. Picture a canvas painted with courage, determination, and the unwavering commitment of individuals who, against the backdrop of challenges, are weaving a narrative of progress. This period highlights that violence against women is a major human rights violation worldwide.

This year's theme, ’UNiTE! Invest to Prevent Violence Against Women & Girls,’ shines a spotlight on the transformative journeys of women overcoming adversity. The stories from Oasis Programme ‘Resilience and Empowerment of Vulnerable Women: The Future of Jordan’s Growth and Stability’ embody the spirit of this global campaign, demonstrating the incredible resilience and empowerment of women in the face of life's challenges.

Abeer Abu-Rizeq's story is a Tale of Perseverance and Triumph and a testament to the human spirit's resilience. Facing life's hurdles head-on, Abeer found a new lease on life at the Oasis Centre.

“I am very grateful that I learnt about this centre and the courses it offers. I found out about it through my friends. My acceptance into the programme came at just the right time, which was much needed, as I am divorced now and have a son whom I need to take good care of. Additionally, I have a disability that makes my condition quite challenging,” she shares.

For Abeer, the journey has been about continuous self-improvement and empowerment. “My advice to all women is to always work on themselves and keep learning. It’s always nice to learn new things that make us improve. There are always people out there willing to help and guide us.” Her journey from adversity to becoming an adept tailor symbolizes the transformative power of support and opportunity.

Ala’a Al-Kasabreh's experience at the Oasis Centre is a narrative of embracing new beginnings and change. A mother of four daughters, Ala’a found a sense of independence and creativity through her engagement in the tailoring course. “After my experience at the Oasis centre, I am now more creative, more open to other new experiences. I feel I am more independent, much better about myself, and can take better care of my family. This experience has added much to my life.” she recounts.

Ala’a confidently affirmed “I am very glad I could meet new people during this journey, we all exchanged and benefitted from each other’s experiences, and I am well connected now.” Ala’a’s story reflects the empowering effect of learning and personal development.

Dua’a Al-Omari’s journey in crafting a New Future  isan inspiring tale of transformation through the Hairdressing Training programme at the Oasis Centre. Balancing her family responsibilities with her training, she emerged as a skilled and confident professional. “Luckily, I encountered no significant challenges during my time in the course. My family's support was invaluable; they helped me tremendously. It was a remarkable and transformative experience. I hope to have more opportunities like this in the future with the Oasis centre.” Dua’a elaborates.

She further reflects, “I learnt numerous new skills, and the psychosocial support sessions offered by the centre allowed me to express my thoughts and emotions more effectively. They empowered me and enhanced my self-esteem.” Her story illustrates the profound impact of skill development and empowering confident in forging new paths.

UN Women Jordan champions against gender-based violence, extending beyond coordination to direct support for affected individuals. Through community-based initiatives, the organization empowers survivors by enhancing their understanding of their rights, providing economic opportunities, promoting positive coping mechanisms and leadership roles. Additionally, UN Women Jordan strengthens the capacity of local partners and government actors in addressing gender-based violence, protection from sexual exploitation and abuse (PSEA), and gender equality (GE), fostering a knowledgeable and responsive community network.

This programme has been pivotal in empowering women like Abeer, Ala’a, and Dua’a and many more women in Oasis centre, especially those facing challenging circumstances. These stories also stand as powerful examples of the positive impact of investing in women's empowerment and skill development which support violence prevention. Their transformative journey at the UN Women operated Oasis Centre in Madaba, funded by the European Union through the Regional Trust Fund ‘Madad’, the governments of Canada, Australia, Finland, France, Iceland, and Italy, in Response to the Syrian crisis, in partnership with the Ministry of Social Development. These narratives are not just individual success stories, they are our collective hope and showcasing the impact of empowering women in creating a world free from gender-based violence.

The 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence is an annual international campaign that kicks off on 25 November, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, and runs until 10 December, Human Rights Day.

The campaign was started by activists at the inauguration of the Women’s Global Leadership Institute in 1991. It is used as an organizing strategy by individuals and organizations around the world to call for the prevention and elimination of violence against women and girls.
