Empowering Women Through Digital Skills: UN Women-Nokia Partnership kicks off with information sessions for Nokia volunteers in Jordan and Argentina
Date:
In a groundbreaking collaboration, Nokia and UN Women have joined forces to advance global gender equality and women’s empowerment, in line with Agenda 2030 and SDG 5: Achieve gender quality and empower all women and girls. This partnership includes access to tailored digital skills trainings for vulnerable women in Jordan and Argentina, as part of programme implementation in eight countries. The training will be designed and delivered by more than 100 volunteers, each contributing their expertise and time to create sustainable impact for women and girls.
Jordan Orientation Session: Oasis Beneficiaries in Za’atari Camp
On April 30, UN Women Jordan hosted an engaging orientation session for Nokia’s staff and volunteers. The goal was to support the implementation of Nokia’s skills training programme for the Oasis beneficiaries in Za’atari Camp. During the session, UN Women provided an overview of the Oasis programme and highlighted the challenges faced by Syrian refugee women in accessing employment and entrepreneurship opportunities. The session aimed to enhance training quality and impact by ensuring that the training content will be based on the experiences and needs of the women participating.
Argentina Implementation: Empowering Women in Buenos Aires and Gran Chaco
In Argentina, the digital skills training programme will aim to focus on improving employability opportunities and entrepreneurship development for women. Accordingly, another orientation session was also delivered to Nokia’s staff and volunteers by UN Women. Nokia’s staff will guide the potential participants through digital learning and entrepreneurship pursuits. Verónica Baracat, UN Women’s Country Programme Coordinator in Argentina, emphasized the urgency of investing in digital education and employment opportunities for young women:
“In Argentina, women’s labour participation is 18.7% lower than men’s; they face higher rates of labour informality, are more likely to be unemployed, and earn lower incomes. In the case of women under the age of 29, they face three times as much unemployment as those between ages 30 and 64. These gaps show how necessary it is to invest in digital education and access to employment opportunities for young women.”
The strategic approach of the partnership between UN Women and Nokia aims to maximize impact and promote economic empowerment, bridging gender gaps and fostering sustainable change.
