UN Women JCO organized a visit with NOKIA to introduce the integrated services provided by the Oasis programme as a starting point for the Nokia-UN Women collaboration initiative in Jordan. UN Women has established 4 women and girls empowerment and resilience centers in Za'atari and Azraq camps and 18 centres in host communities.  This initiative reaches around 1,500 Syrian and Jordanian beneficiaries per year and has significantly empowered around 90,000 individuals directly and indirectly since its inception in 2012, predominantly Syrian refugees and vulnerable Jordanian women, approximately 13% of which are people with disabilities. Recognized for creating safe, inclusive spaces, these centres have provided crucial livelihood opportunities for the short- and long-term, skill development, and early childhood services. The female-centered approach provided through the Oasis centres has notably advanced refugee women's economic autonomy and self-confidence, driving the program's relevance to national response efforts. The Oasis centres are multi-sectoral service centres and are conceptualized around three building blocks:

  1. Secure livelihoods opportunities provided via cash for work that increase opportunities for sustainable employment, whether through job placement, or entrepreneurship opportunities.
  2. Strengthened protection including through gender-based violence prevention, awareness-raising and referral services.
  3. Leadership, agency and civic engagement initiatives for women, while also engaging men on social issues related to gender equality and women's empowerment.

The courses designed and facilitated by Nokia global and regional employees will contribute to the educational opportunities of UN Women's Oasis beneficiaries in Za’atari camp to increase their digital literacy, business literacy, financial literacy, and communication skills and will significantly contribute to UN Women's commitment to women's continuous learning and their economic empowerment. During the pilot phase of this partnership, beneficiaries will be equipped with essential knowledge and skills to engage in entrepreneurial activities and manage their own business ventures. This initiative will be piloted in one Oasis centre in Za’atari camp.

"The women we target with our programme embody resilience in the face of adversity. Through our initiatives, they find their voices, cultivate their skills, and pave their paths toward empowerment and opportunity. Bridging the digital divide is crucial, ensuring all women have access to vital digital skills training, empowering them to seize opportunities in a digitally-driven world."
